Mother Killed In Hit-And-Run, RI Man Arrested

The 37-year-old woman was walking with her young son in Seekonk when she was struck by 27-year-old Jeremy Schmidt, authorities said.

SEEKONK, MA — A Rhode Island man was arrested after a hit-and-run that killed a mother walking with her young son. The Bristol County District Attorney's Office said Jeremy Schmidt, 27, of East Providence was arrested by Rhode Island State Police early Friday morning.

Authorities said Schmidt was driving a Jeep Cherokee on Route 152 early Thursday evening when he struck the woman. He never stopped, driving into Rhode Island, police said.

Antonieta Vargas, 37, of Seekonk was brought to Rhode Island Hospital, where was pronounced dead. She had been walking with her 11-year-old son.

Police found Schmidt after identifying his vehicle. He will be arraigned Friday morning in Providence.
