SHREWSBURY, MA — Congressman Jim McGovern called for the resignation of United States Postmaster General Louis DeJoy at a press conference in Shrewsbury on Tuesday. McGovern maintained that the United States Postal Service was being sabotaged by President Donald Trump and his administration.

McGovern claimed the president was using his power in office to cheat the election and that DeJoy was "systematically dismantling key USPS functions to help his boss stay in power."

McGovern highlighted nationwide delays in postal service and an announcement from the USPS, warning that millions of mail-in ballots — including those in Massachusetts — may not be counted due to delays caused by recent cutbacks.

"They have even started removing mail-sorting machines from postal facilities, including at least 12 in Massachusetts," McGovern said, "Right down the road here at the Central Massachusetts Processing and Distribution Center, we're told that three mail-sorting machines have already been taken offline."

McGovern has plans to file new USPS legislation later this week. On Sunday night, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she was calling the House back to session to vote on a bill that would protect the USPS.
