Eight Places to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Somerville

A block party, a mariachi band, tripe soup and copious margaritas are some of your options for celebrating Cinco de Mayo in Somerville this year.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know Cinco de Mayo is basically an American holiday. That doesn't mean it's not fun.

If you're looking to celebrate Mexican style in Somerville, here are some choices:

Taza Chocolate Block Party
Taza Chocloate is throwing a large party, with food from Olé Mexican Grill, margaritas, Mexican music, beer from Brooklyn Brewery and dueling taco trucks, to name just a few things. It's on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Taza's store, 561 Windsor St.

El Potro
The party continues in Union Square at El Potro, where there will be a party all day, with a mariachi band and gifts such as T-shirts and hats.

Maya Sol
If you want to celebrate where people tend to order their food in Spanish, check out Maya Sol, where there will be a two-for-one deal on pickles (if I heard correctly).

Taco Loco Mexican Grill
Another East Somerville option with authentic Mexican fare. To celebrate the holiday, branch out from your standard chicken burrito with something like a beef tongue taco or mondongo (tripe) soup.

Rudy's Cafe
The plan at Rudy's, a haunt for Teele Square residents and Tufts students, is to be very busy. Rudy's serves Tex-Mex, has over 50 tequilas and serves margaritas the traditional way and the blended way. Be careful with those margaritas; they'll knock you over.

Tu y Yo
Tu y Yo is serving a special brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be celebrating all day.

Painted Burro
In Davis Square, Painted Burro doesn't have anything out of the ordinary planned. It will open at 11 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday, and they expect a busy weekend.

Cantina la Mexicana
Cantina Mexicana is doing it's normal thing. It's another option if you're looking to celebrate in Union Square.

BONUS

Aguacate Verde
Aguacate Verde, near Porter Square, isn't planning anything major. That's because they celebrate their two-year anniversary later this month, and they're saving the party until then. When you need a second fix, this will be the place to visit.
