GLX Night Work Could Get Noisy In Somerville, Medford
Residents living near the train tracks may hear horns and other noises from heavy machinery over the coming weeks.

SOMERVILLE, MA — Residents of Somerville and Medford living near the Green Line Extension rail alignment — especially those between Lowell Street and College Avenue — may experience more nighttime noise over the next few weeks, the MBTA said.
The GLX project is preparing to move the fourth and final section of Commuter Rail line track to its final position this month. Both daytime and nighttime work in this area will focus on completing drainage installation, retaining wall construction, grading, placing crushed stone ballast for the new track bed and installing track.
The yellow Multipurpose Machine will be on the rails most nights, and the vehicle is required to sound its horn when it stops and starts, the MBTA said. Additional heavy machinery is expected to result in higher noise levels, which may be disruptive at times.

Completion of this work requires at least one line of track to be out of service, so construction is scheduled at night.
