Somerville-based Gene Research Company Implements Large-scale Layoffs: Report
The layoffs are happening as the company shifts its focus toward bringing two priority treatments into clinical trials.
SOMERVILLE, MA — A Therapeutics company is slated to lay off 90 employees, according to a report from Boston Business Journal.
Tessera Therapeutics is headquartered at 101 South St. in Somerville. The engineering company specializes in genome sequencing and writing with the long-term goal of curing auto-immune diseases such as sickle cell.
The business first arrived in Somerville in 2021 as one of the businesses operating in the Boynton Yards building for Flagship Pioneering. In 2022, Tessera was able to undergo a relatively large expansion that included improvements to its lab, manufacturing, and automation capabilities through Series C venture capital funding.

However, according to a state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, the company is slated to lay off 90 employees, with almost all of them from the Somerville location. One Washington-based employee is also reportedly included in the layoffs. The 90 workers who are soon to lose their jobs account for approximately #% percent of Tessera’s workforce.
The workforce reduction will take effect on Sunday, March 8.
