SOMERVILLE, MA — The city’s new fire station on Assembly Row is now open, marking the first new station to launch in Somerville in 51 years.

The first day of service at the 10,000 square-foot station was Wednesday, Sept. 3. It is located on the corner of Middlesex Avenue and Foley Street, and will primarily serve the Assembly area as well as the Ten Hills neighborhood. Between three and four firefighters are slated to be working there at all times.
The station includes features such as a decontamination area, which has specialized equipment for firefighters to clean protective gear and a dedicated heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system to keep contaminants out of the living areas. The station also has a dayroom and kitchen, a fitness room, individual bunk rooms, and is completely fossil fuel-free.

“The new fire station will greatly improve response times and provide critical public safety services to the rapidly growing Assembly Square neighborhood,” Fire Chief Charles Breen said. “In addition, this state-of-the-art station is proof of the City’s commitment to improving the quality of life for our dedicated firefighters.”
