📰 News we're reading

• Somerville-based Gene Research Company Implements Large-scale Layoffs: Report (patch.com) — Somerville residents are facing significant job losses as Tessera Therapeutics plans to lay off 90 employees, almost all from its 101 South St. headquarters. The genome engineering company, which expanded in Boynton Yards after major venture funding, now expects the workforce reduction to take effect March 8. Local officials and workers may feel the impact of this cut at one of the city’s high-profile biotech employers.

• The Burren agrees to move into a future Davis Square high-rise (wbur.org) — A major redevelopment proposal in Somerville’s Davis Square would demolish several Elm Street buildings, but The Burren pub has secured a deal to return in the planned 26‑story tower. The 40B project, which includes income‑restricted units, is drawing pushback from musicians and neighbors while city officials and the developer prepare for another round of community meetings.

• ‘Don't Talk About Joe Mac' Review: Cracking The Code Of Silence (wsj.com) — Somerville plays a central role in this review of a new true-crime book about mobster Joe McDonald, who grew up and ran organized crime in the city. The piece recounts how McDonald helped found the Winter Hill Gang, allegedly carried out dozens of hits, and maintained a strict criminal code that shaped Somerville’s underworld reputation for decades.
