Somerville Art Thief Caught On Video, Police Say

The police department released footage of an art theft from last month in an effort to identify the culprit.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The police department has released surveillance footage of a person believed to have stolen a painting from the Somerville Open Studios on Sunday, Jan. 5.

The video shows a person dressed in all-black clothing removing the artwork from the wall in the studio’s lobby located on 50 Prospect St. After hiding the painting outside, the person returns with a dark-colored sedan more than 30 minutes later to load the car with it and escape.

The work was created by local artist Adam Leveille, who was one of 20 artists whose work was featured in the studio’s “Visions of Somerville” exhibit. The police is asking any community member with information to contact Detective Jonathan Thermidor by calling 617-625-1600 extension 7231.
