Somerville Firefighter Retires After Decades Of Service
Blanca Alcaraz ended her storied career with the Somerville Fire Department this week.
SOMERVILLE, MA — The fire department celebrated the retirement of Lieutenant Blanca Alcaraz this week after nearly three decades of service.
Alcaraz joined the department in 1998 working in the Union Square neighborhood before being transferred to Tower One on 651 Somerville Ave. She was promoted to Lieutenant in 2011 and was returned to her original post.
Alcaraz has also made her mark in Somerville as the owner of be. In Union Yoga on 440 Somerville Ave. Blanca reportedly became interested in yoga as a way to meditate and relax the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

“As a firefighter, my sense of loss for everyone that day grew tremendously,” Alcaraz said in a statement. “Words became insufficient and my body became a receptacle for that silence and stress.”
