Somerville Keeps Eviction Moratorium As Nationwide Ban Expires
The moratorium, which was extended until Sept. 15, will remain in effect, Mayor Curtatone said Monday.
SOMERVILLE, MA — An extension of the eviction moratorium in Somerville will remain in effect, despite the nationwide ban expiring over the weekend, Mayor Joseph Curtatone said.
City officials agreed in June to extend the moratorium for 90 days, until Sept. 15.
"Somerville's eviction moratorium remains in place," Curtatone tweeted Monday.

The measure adopted June 17 ended the moratorium on commercial evictions and relaxed the rules for landlords, allowing them to enter residential units for non-emergency reasons with 48 hours advance notice to tenants.
Nationally, the moratorium ended July 31, after four extensions and numerous challenges in court. Nearly 11,980 renters in Massachusetts said it's very likely they'll be evicted from their homes in the next two months.

Meanwhile, 85,409 renters say they have no confidence in their ability to pay rent next month and more than 127,814 are still trying to catch up on rent payments, according to the Census Bureau.
