UPDATED: Somerville Man Gets Stuck In Boston Tunnels

Daniel Kelly was rescued by police, then charged with trespassing by the same.

A bizarre situation unfolded Monday night in the Boston tunnels, as a Somerville man claiming to be stuck in a storm drain called the police for help, and was subsequently arrested for trespassing in the Boston Tunnels.

Massachusetts State Police report that at around 9:20 p.m., they received a distress call from Daniel J. Kelly, 27, of Somerville.

Kelly told them he could see white walls, a light blue ground, and no perceivable way out of the storm drain he had somehow become trapped in.

Figuring he was somewhere in the vicinity of the D ramp and Ted Williams/Connector tunnels, police say several cars drove around slowly with sirens blaring, hoping Kelly would hear them.

After 20 minutes, Kelly confirmed that he was close enough to hear a siren, leading police to believe he was somewhere in the D ramp.

Upon shutting down and investigating the D ramp, police say they observed a hand waving from a vent on the tunnel wall. Kelly was spotted sitting on a pipe approximately 15 feet off the ground.

It is unclear why he initially said he was in a storm drain.

Kelly was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday. He represented himself, was released into his own custody, and will return to court on June 10.
