Somerville Planning Upgrades For Ice Rink
The Mayor has proposed turning the rink into a comprehensive recreation hub.
SOMERVILLE, MA — The city announced its plan to transform Founders Memorial Skating Rink into a multi-purpose recreation facility.
Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and her Administration is proposing the installation of a multi-purpose gym floor. Ballantyne said that the idea addresses the city’s need for traditional recreation space, and the presence of Veterans Memorial Rink on Somerville Avenue allows more flexibility for change at Founders. However, she emphasized that the plans include the ability to transform the facility back into an ice rink. The cost for the renovation is estimated to cost approximately $168,000 and requires final approval from the City Council. Ballantyne said the project could serve as a temporary solution as the city explores the possibility of a long-term community center.
“We are filling the gap from what Founders was to what it can be, restoring access to vital recreational opportunities for all Somerville residents,” Ballantyne said. “Founders makes smart use of current resources to provide the recreation space that residents need today."
