Tufts Student Detained By ICE: Report
A PhD graduate student was reportedly taken into custody outside her off-campus apartment.
SOMERVILLE, MA — A graduate student at Tufts University is in federal custody after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to a report from GBH.
Rumesya Ozturk was detained near her off-campus home Tuesday while on her way to meet with friends.
According to Ozturk’s attorney Mahsa Khanbabai, her client had a valid visa as a PhD student. Khanbabai has since filed a petition with the U.S. District Court to have Ozturk released. The judge ordered ICE to respond to the petition by Friday, March 28.

Tufts President Sunil Kumar was reportedly told that Ozturk’s visa status had expired. During her detainment, Ozturk was reportedly handcuffed and brought to a black vehicle with tinted windows.
