Wynn Casino Breaks Ground Across the River From Somerville

The $2.1 billion project will create 4,000 construction jobs and 4,000 permanent service jobs on the 33-acre waterfront site.

SOMERVILLE, MA – The Wynn Casino will begin construction across the Mystic River in Everett after years of legal wrangling with Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone. At today’s groundbreaking ceremony in Everett for the casino Chris Gordon, president of Wynn Design and Development, said remaining lawsuits will not slow the project down. “We are absolutely, positively moving forward from this day on,” he said.

Gordon said the casino will open in June 2019. The $2.1 billion project will create 4,000 construction jobs and 4,000 permanent service jobs on the 33-acre waterfront site.

Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria said “today is a great day for Everett” and focused on Wynn’s cleanup of the Mystic River’s shoreline. “You will soon be able to walk along the harbor and enjoy the shoreline,” he said.

Everett City Councilor Wayne Mattewsky said the day represented a shift in Everett’s history from “an industrial city to a first class city.”

Somerville city officials had appealed to the state to deny the project’s waterfront permit, known as Chapter 91. Last week, state officials denied the appeal.

“I was very disappointed Somerville pulled that – we had always been cooperative with their Assembly Square development," DeMaria said. "It’s time Everett gets a chance to turn things around.”
