STONEHAM, MA — A woman leaped from her roof into police officers' arms while her house burned Saturday afternoon. Responders arrived at the Flint Avenue home around 12:25 p.m. Fire was coming from the kitchen and smoke out of the windows. The woman who jumped from the second-floor roof was the only person home at the time. She was not hurt.

A dog was rescued from the home and taken to the vet.

Firefighters kept the fire from spreading to the entire structure but the single-family home took heavy water and smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

"Today marks the last day of Fire Prevention Week and the theme for this year covered how important it is for people to have an escape plan to get out of their home," Stoneham Fire Chief Matthew Grafton said in a statement. "The resident who was at home at the time of today’s fire is an excellent example of someone who knew to find an available escape route and got herself safely out of the house as quickly as possible."
