At the July 24 Board of Selectmen's meeting, Department of Public Works Superintendent John Batchelder reminded residents to dispose of these cleaning products in the trash rather than by flushing them.
He said the DPW has had several issues lately with pumps at various pumping stations in town getting "plugged up" because these Swiffer pads are being flushed and are unable to smoothly pass through the pumps.

They are getting "caught up" in the impellers of these pumps, and it's a becoming a serious issue, Batchelder said.
The DPW has recently dealt with issues at the York St. pumping station, which takes about half of the sewerage in town. Crews spent all day Friday removing the Swiffer pads from the pumps there.
The backup pump has been used at the York St. station as a result. If the backup pump clogged, it would only take minutes before waste started backing up.
So, think twice before flushing a Swiffer pad or a similar cleaning product.
