Gallery: Local Students Featured at Art Exhibition at Stoughton Public Library

Students of Judith Murray Smith are displaying their drawings and paintings at the Stoughton Public Library Staircase Gallery for the month of April.

The art students of Judith Murray Smith are displaying over 50 drawings and paintings at the Staircase Gallery for the month of April.

Students participate in Kreative Kids (ages 5-10) and Talented Teens (ages 10-18) at the Childrens Museum in Easton; and the Sunday Session (6-18) at the Felos Art Center in Stoughton.

Pencil, charcoal, prismacolor colored pencil, acrylic, and watercolor are used to create images from familiar objects such as shoes, toys and tools. Emphasis is placed on direct observation, and right/left brain drawing.

This year, additional focus was placed on painting in the styles of Vincent Van Gogh, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse and Georgia O’Keeffe.

Positive/negative thinking, composition and independent planning are always emphasized. As each student’s technical skills advance, development of personal themes is encouraged.

Smith and her family sponsor an annual competition to honor the memory of her mother, school librarian Margaret Murray. Cash prizes are awarded to the winners in the Teen Division, while students in the Pre-teen and Elementary Divisions will receive art lessons or art supplies.

Awards were presented to student artists from Stoughton, Easton, Canton, Brockton, West Bridgewater and Abington at the Annual Student Art Exhibition at the last Wednesday, March 28 in the Wales French Room.

The winners of the Teen Division are:

  • 1st place: Julia Carabatsos, age 13, Easton
  • 2nd place: Jessica Looney, age 13, Easton,
  • 3rd place: Amanda Folan, age 13, Canton,
  • Honorable Mentions: Nadia Eldemery, age 13, Easton; Kendra Lim, age 14, Stoughton; and  Marisa White, age 13, Brockton

Winners of Pre-teen Division are:

  • 1st Place: Joey Looney, age 10, Easton
  • 2nd Place: Foxx Hart, age 10, Easton,
  • 3rd Place: Brendan Gallagher, age 11, Stoughton,
  • 4th Place: Kate Doherty, age 10, Stoughton
  • Honorable Mention: Julia Do, age 10, Abington; Jane McNulty, age 10, West Bridgewater; and Sasha Zis, age 10

Winners of the Elementary Division are:

  • 1st Place(tie): Sofia Belanger, age 6, Easton
  • 1st Place (tie): Jennifer Buche, age 8, Easton
  • 2nd Place (tie): Ashley Johnson, age 7, Brockton,
  • 2nd Place (tie): Anna Wood, age 6, Brockton

Other exhibiting students include Lana D'Addieco and Emily D’Addieco from Stoughton; Bradley Costa, Kat Toomey and Shannon Cahill from Easton; and Kayla Leighton from West Bridgewater.
