Selectmen Anastos and Anzivino Will Run Unopposed in April's Town Election

Meanwhile, four candidates will vie for two school committee seats. The deadline for filing papers for town-wide office has passed; the deadline for filing papers to run for Town Meeting Representative is March 1, 2011.

No ballots have been cast—the town election isn’t until April 5—but Stephen Anastos and John Anzivino have in effect both been reelected to a second term on the Board of Selectmen.

The deadline to return papers to run for town-wide office was last Tuesday, and no challengers will run against incumbents Anastos and Anzivino for the two available seats on the B.O.S.

Anastos is the current chairman of the B.O.S. At Anzivino’s , held January 23, Anzivino said the prospect of running unopposed is a “vote of confidence that we’re doing good and positive things for the town.”

Town Manager Francis T. Crimmins, Jr. congratulated both at last Tuesday’s Selectmen meting.

But, there is a crowded field of candidates for two seats on the School Committee. Incumbents Dr. Erdem Ural and Deborah Sovinee will face challengers Jeffrey Benson and George DoLinsky.

There are two seats available on the Redevelopment Authority and three candidates. Scott Hersee, Sr., who was appointed to the Redevelopment Authority when Sovinee resigned to serve on the School Committee, will be running unopposed to retain his seat for the next two years. Donna Ayers and Louis F. Gitto will be running for a five year seat.

Incumbent Dr. Roberta Camacho is not seeking reelection.

There are two seats on the Housing Authority this election cycle, and only two candidates. Incumbent Arthur Slate is in position to be reelected for a five year term. Richard Jasmin is running, unopposed, to fill a vacant seat for the next three years.

Incumbent Town Moderator Howard Hansen is also running unopposed for another one year term.

The deadline for filing papers to run for is March 1, 2011.

Precincts three and four already have a bevy of candidates. A combined 28 people (14 in each precinct) will be vying for only 14 spots (7 in each precinct). Interestingly, of the 28 candidates so far, only nine are incumbents.

But in precinct 1, eight seats are open and only five candidates, all incumbents, have filed their papers. There are currently eight candidates each for precincts 7 and 8, but there are nine and 12 spots to fill, respectively.

Town Meeting begins Monday, May 2 at the auditorium.

Ninety-five articles have been proposed for consideration at Town Meeting. These articles run the gamut, dealing with collective bargaining contract funding; taking care of unpaid bills; the purchasing of a new ambulance, four marked police cruisers and D.P.W. vehicles; accepting preliminary designs for the expansion of the Stoughton Public Library; refurbishing the tennis courts at the High School and restoring the surface of the track at SHS; accepting streets as public ways; and amending zoning laws to allow tattoo parlors in a central business district (CBD).
