Stoughton Police Charge RI Man With 5th OUI

Scott Deveney, 49, of Middletown, was ordered held on $10,000 cash bail.

STOUGHTON, MA — A Rhode Island man was ordered held following his fifth arrest for drunken driving.

Scott Deveney, 49, of Middletown, Rhode Island, was arrested April 19 and also charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, operating with a suspended license, failure to stop, and carrying a dangerous weapon. He was arraigned in Stoughton District Court the next day and ordered held on $10,000 cash bail. If he posts bail, Deveney must remain alcohol-free and submit to remote alcohol testing, according to court records.

At about 10:45 p.m. on April 19, police saw a white Chevrolet truck make a right turn from Washington Street to School Street without stopping. At one point, the driver, identified as Deveney, turned the truck directly in front of a police cruiser, causing the police officer to abruptly stop his vehicle to avoid a crash, according to a police report. Deveney then allegedly slowed down to a near stop before quickly turning right, jumping the curb, and going into a parking lot.

Deveney allegedly told police that he was coming from a barber shop and had nothing to drink, but officers found a beer in his cup holder along with a Budweiser box inside the truck. Police say the Rhode Island man had glassy and bloodshot eyes, along with the smell of alcohol on his breath.

Deveney was taken into custody after failing multiple field sobriety tests. He refused to register his blood alcohol content level through a breath test.
