Experience America: A Smithsonian Tour

This DVD series will take place January 3 – March 21, 12 Wednesdays starting at 9:30 AM. The Smithsonian is a repository of America’s history, achievement, aspirations and identity. It holds the artifacts of great leaders, and those of ordinary Americans. It houses scientific specimens and technological wonders. It is home to art, music, films and writings with a collection of some 137 million items and more than two dozen museums and research center, the Smithsonian brings our national epic to life as nothing else can. Your guide is bestselling author, Dr. Richard Kurin, Under Secretary for History, Art and Culture at the Smithsonian. You have heard of Diabetes… but what about Pre-Diabetes? It’s real and it’s a big deal. Did you know that there might be advance signs that you are at risk? In addition, there are actions you can take to decrease that risk. If you would like to know more, join us on Monday, January 8 at 1:00 PM when Nutritionist Traci Robidoux, RD, from BayPath Elder Services, will give you more information about this phenomenon and what to do about it from a nutrition standpoint. Lunch and Listen

On Wednesday, January 17 at 12:00 PM, lunch will be served at the Sudbury Senior Center; there is a $3.00 suggested donation. Then sit back and enjoy some music. The Flashback band will perform after lunch at 1:00 PM. The band has been playing together for 12 years. They are a four piece band from Marlboro, MA playing rock`n roll music from the 50`s to the 70`s, Motown and Country. For the last four years, they have been playing at Fenway Park on Yawkee Way before the Red Sox games. Veterans Talk

The Veterans Talk group meets once a month on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. The next session will meet on Wednesday, January 10 at 9:30 AM at the Sudbury Senior Center. Hearing Clinic

The Sudbury Senior Center will have a Hearing Clinic on Friday, January 12 from 9:30 AM-11:00 AM.

Michael Drennan of Rogers Hearing Solutions will offer complimentary wax and hearing screenings on the second Friday of each month from 9:30 - 11:00 AM. Mr. Drennan is a Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist serving Marlborough area since 2000. Please schedule your appointment by calling the Sudbury Senior Center at 978-443-3055.

Soup’s On – The Mystery of Magnification

Soup’s On, “The Mystery of Magnification” will take place at the Sudbury Senior Center on Thursday, January 11, 12:00 PM; soup and 12:45 PM presentation. Did you know that over 25% of Americans over the age of 75 have some form of vision impairment? Loss of vision can be challenging, physically and emotionally. To help our community understand vision loss and what can be done please join us for a presentation by The Carroll Center’s Low Vision Specialist, Robert McGillivray, to learn about the latest magnification devices and technologies that can enhance quality of life and maximize options for those with vision loss. Heart of Meditation – New Class!

Heart of Meditation will take place on Tuesdays at 10:00 AM, January 9 – February 27. This is an 8 week class and cost $50.00. Katherine McClean LDN, CYT, CPT has been teaching meditation through her workshops and yoga classes for over 20 years and has maintained a personal meditation practice for even longer. She is passionate about sharing her love of meditation with others. Having studied many different meditative styles, she has a wealth of experience, which helps to open her students to the deep and lasting benefits of meditation. . Class can be taught in chairs or you can sit on the floor if you prefer. Please sign up ASAP; we need eight people to run class. Historic US Route 20

The Historic US route 20 presentation will take place at the Sudbury Senior Center on Tuesday, January 23 at 1:00 PM. In 2010, Presenter Bryan Farr drove across the country and wrote a coffee table book about his experience. While researching the book, he found more and more information about the unique sites and small towns that dotted the historic highway. With this information, he formed a nonprofit organization to promote the small towns, businesses and historic sites along all 3365 miles of historic route 20. This program will highlight the history of America’s longest highway from an early Native American trail to a modern transcontinental highway. AARP HomeFit

On January 29 at 1:00 PM Beth Gray-Nix a HomeFit facilitator will be at the Sudbury Senior Center. Did you know, the AARP HomeFit program was developed to educate older adults how to navigate all living spaces independently to allow them to remain in their own homes. Participants receive information on how to evaluate their home for “livability” should they themselves or one of their family members become unable to use stairs, or need to rely on assistive devices. It is designed help individuals plan for independence, choice and dignity as they age. Beth will help you understand how homes can be designed and modified to help you get around independently in all of your living areas and how to make your home as safe as possible. Foxwoods Trip – Feb 5, 2018

Foxwoods trips will continue on a quarterly basis with Deanna Sklenak and Ron Ragno organizing and promoting them—thanks Deanna and Ron! Please sign up early, so that we can be sure to have enough participants to cover the bus fee. The next trip is on Monday, Feb 5, 2018. Comfort Food Caring Café – Jan 22

The Sudbury Senior Center is offering a free Comfort Food Caring Café on Monday, January 22 from

12:00 PM – 2:00 PM. Caregivers and their loved ones with memory challenges are invited to gather for a delicious lunch, entertainment, conversation, arts, music and laughter! This is a chance for you to get out of the house, and let go of your worries. Pizza and a Movie

Have some pizza for lunch and then watch a movie at the Sudbury Senior Center. Pizza is served at 12:00 PM and the movie starts at 12:30 PM. Showing on Thursday, January 25, “The Glass Castle” Rated PG-13 2hrs. Adapted from the novel of the same name, this family drama follows Jeannette Walls, who spends her hardscrabble childhood on the run with her negligent artist mother and storytelling alcoholic father. Fast forward Jeannette Walls is now a successful socialite and journalist, is on her way to a fancy-schmancy New York City party. Looking out the window of a taxi, she watches a homeless woman. It's her mother. Jeannette realizes she needs to check her privilege, and she tells us the story of how she got to where she is, schmoozing with society folk while her homeless Mom is literally sifting through garbage. Part-Time Van Drivers Wanted

J|J oin the team! The Sudbury Senior Center seeks part-time Van Drivers to transport Sudbury residents in handicapped accessible vans. Hours will be variable, a few to several hours/week some daytime, some evening hours available. Drivers must be, or willing to be, certified in CPR and first aid and willing to participate in required annual driver trainings. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing is required. Experience with older adults and persons with disabilities is preferred. Being flexible, kind and compassionate is essential. Must pass CORI check and have a good driving record. FISH Volunteers needed

FISH. (Friends in Services Helping) is a volunteer program that provides transportation for Sudbury residents to medical appointments, when their family and friends are not available. The volunteer drivers are under no obligation to accept any assignment unless it fits with their schedules. There is no monthly or weekly requirement. F.I.S.H. is a great way to help your neighbors in need. If you are willing to become a volunteer driver, please call Janet Lipkin at the Sudbury Senior Center at 978-443-3055.

Senior Notes Singing Group

This Senior Notes singing group meets on the first and third Thursday of the month at 12:45 PM at the Sudbury Senior Center. Lift your voice and lift your spirits by singing! Gather with us in Room 1 and we will provide you with lyrics (and sheet music for those who would like it) for a selection of familiar popular songs to share.

Mostly, we find a good starting note and sing a cappella, but sometimes we have recorded accompaniment to carry us along. We take suggestions for songs to add to our choices and invite all to join the fun! Please call the Sudbury Senior Center to sign up at 978-443-3055.

Help the Town and Earn a Tax Abatement

Applications are now available for the Sudbury Senior and Veteran Tax Work-off Programs at the Sudbury Senior Center. Eligible Sudbury seniors or veterans may be able to work in a Town Department and “earn” a tax abatement for the following year. In 2018, the abatement will be $11.00 an hour or $1,100 for 100 hours of work. Note: Veterans should submit a copy of their discharge papers along with their application. All applications should be delivered to Sudbury Senior Center, Tax Work-off Program, 40 Fairbank Road, Sudbury, MA 01776. Shades of Gray

Shades of Gray band will perform at the Sudbury Senior Center on Wednesday, February 7 at 1:00 PM. The band portrays an American Civil War era camp band, playing a mix of 19th century, old time and campfire songs. The band got its start as a group of Confederate Civil War reenactors. Historically, the camp band was an integral part of camp life for the Civil War era soldier. Shades of Gray had its beginnings as most camp bands of the era would have, with soldiers coming together around the campfire to swap stories and sing songs.

Turn the Page Book Group

Join “Turn the Page” book group on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM. Even if you have not read the book! LINC - Learning Intergenerational Community

LINC the new intergenerational after school program has a new session starting up in the Spring 2018, connecting 4th and 5th graders with adults 55+. Students and adults will have an unforgettable experience with this teacher-led curriculum for curious kids of all ages. Six structured after school sessions from 3:30-5:00 PM meet at Sudbury Public Schools. Adults 55+ are invited to participate.
