Original article:

Jason Fleury was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Hampton, Vir., after a grand jury issued a secret indictment last Friday charging him with murder, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.

Mendez was last seen on Nov. 6, 2014. Her remains were discovered on King’s BeachJan. 29 where they appeared to have washed ashore.

Fleury was arrested by Massachusetts and Virginia police, according to a statement from the DA’s office. He is expected to be held overnight in Virginia and arraigned as a fugitive from justice Wednesday in Hampton.

Following that, if Fleury waives extradition he will be transported to Massachusetts where he will be arraigned on murder charges in Salem District Court. If he does not waive extradition, the Essex County District Attorney will seek a governor’s warrant to bring him back to the state to face the murder charge.

The DA’s office did not immediately release any further information about Fleury’s connection to Mendez.

In November, however, the Lynn Daily Item reported that a man by the name of Jason Fleury denied any knowledge of Mendez’ disappearance though he did admit to seeing her the night of her disappearance.

The Fleury mentioned in the Daily Item article is registered as a Level 3 sex offender in Lynn. His work address is listed as Swampscott.
