SWAMPSCOTT, MA — Select Board Chair MaryEllen Fletcher and Board member Katie Phelan were re-elected on Tuesday after fending off a challenge from Water and Sewer Advisory Board Chair Liz Smith.

The race was divisive at times with two sitting Board members backing Smith's attempt to unseat either Fletcher or Phelan.

"It was a challenging time because of all the negatively that was thrown out there," Fletcher told Patch Tuesday night. "But with negativity, you get a lot of positivity. It was enjoyable to hear the positive things that people had to say and hear that they were very happy with my leadership on the Board, and with Katie.

"It was a great night."

Phelan thanked her family and campaign workers as she looked forward to a second term.

"This campaign was run by an incredible, all-mom team," she said. "Women who not only work full-time jobs but also carved out countless late nights, early mornings, and weekends to help a fellow mom pursue a vision for our beautiful seaside town.

"Their belief in me — and in what we can accomplish together — kept this campaign strong, focused and full of heart."

Fletcher said she and Phelan will continue to do what they feel "is in the best interest of Swampscott and not the drama."

"We have a job to do," Fletcher said. "Be respectful. Historically, Select Board members did not get involved in races. ... That's really on them and the conversation needs to be with them and not Katie and myself. I will always treat people the way I want to be treated."

Smith conceded the race in a message to Patch shortly after the polls closed at 8 p.m..

"The voters decided they were comfortable with the current Select Board," she wrote. "I want to thank my supporters for their hard work on behalf of the campaign.

"During the last months, it was very gratifying to talk with so many people in Swampscott who care so much about the town."

Fletcher said she agreed "100 percent with Liz" that the voters decided they "are happy with the Select Board that is there."

"I am going to focus on the job of taking care of our town," Fletcher said.

Phelan said she is "excited to continue listening, learning and working hard for this community we all love."

"Let's keep moving Swampscott forward — together," Phelan said.
