SWAMPSCOTT, MA —Officials in Swampscott and other seaside towns on the North Shore are warning beach goers about a lion’s mane jellyfish that has been spotted several times in the past week.
In addition to sightings in Nahant, the jellyfish has been seen off of Fisherman’s and Eisman’s beaches in Swampscott, as well as near the Swampscott Pier.
Lion’s mane jellyfish are one of the biggest species of jellyfish with tentacle spreads up to 100 feet wide. Their stingers have toxins that can cause localized pain and redness in humans.
