Unemployment Up in Swampscott, Stays Among Lowest in the Region
The unemployment rate in Swampscott went from 4.4 to 4.8 percent in the past month, but the town is one of just a few in the area under 5.

The unemployment rate in Swampscott was up by .4 percent in July, according to figures released Tuesday by the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. The town remains more than a percentage point below the statewide average.
The unemployment rate went from 4.4 percent to 4.8 percent, with 370 people reporting they were out of work out of a workforce of 7,779 in July, according to the state government data. In June, 343 Swampscott residents were out of work, the state said.
The statewide unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in July.

The town’s unemployment rate is 1.6 percentage points lower than it was at this time last year, when it was 6.4 percent.
Of the communities immediately nearby, Marblehead has the lowest unemployment rate at 4.3 percent. Hamilton and Swampscott are the only two other communities on the North Shore with unemployment rates under 5 percent.
