What Should Go In Swampscott's Vacant Police Station?

Swampscott has issued a request for interest in reusing the old Swampscott Police Station, which has been vacant since 2013.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — Swampscott issued a Request for Interest, Ideas, and Innovation for its former police station at 86 Burrill Street, which has been mostly unused since its replacement opened in 2013. These days, the two-story building is used primarily for storage and an occasional meeting. Cataldo Ambulance also leases a portion of the building.

According to the Swampscott Reporter, which first reported this story, the town is open to proposals from nonprofits and private businesses, but is not interested in housing proposals for the building. "We'd like to see something creative -- a cafe, or some kind of workspace," Marzie Galazka, Swampscott's director of community and economic development, told the newspaper. The town hopes to lease the building and partner with the new occupant on upgrades and repairs.
