Activity to Pick Up at Sutton Brook Superfund Site in Upcoming Days

A wheel wash station will be in place by June 5 and the site will be connected to the South Street sewer line the week of June 9.

The Environmental Protection Agency continues its work at the Sutton Brook superfund site, and activity is expected to increase of the upcoming days and weeks.

In an update, the EPA said that Tewksbury town officials, contractors and EPA representatives met last week regarding planing, traffic, and safety for the superfund site.

The contractor and Town Engineer will survey the truck route, according to the EPA, in order to identify locations where vegetation should be cut back for safety reasons. In addition, signs for the truck route are being considered in the are of the South Street and Bridge Street intersection, along with the Shawsheen Street and Bridge Street intersection.

"Going forward, the site will be active and regular deliveries of materials, supplies or equipment will continue to occur at a low frequency, including loads of material to construct temporary roads," the EPA said. "At this time, it is expected that transport of fill involving significant truck traffic will begin in late June or early July. When significant truck traffic commences, police presence along the truck route is planned."

A wheel wash station, which is designed to limit the tracking of dirt onto South Street, will be in place by Thursday, the EPA said. Operating hours will be between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

In another effort to limit contamination, the EPA also has a contract in place with a street sweeper who will clean South Street as needed during construction.

Later this summer, the EPA expects that work will occur on the last three Sundays of July in the central portion of the site that is not near any boundaries. Deliveries, however, will not take place on Sundays.

In addition, Saturday work will begin around the same time as Sunday work, continuing into the fall.
