Candidate Q&A: Shawsheen Tech School Committee

Today's first question focuses on the relationship between Shawsheen Tech and the town.

This week, we will be asking three questions of the two candidates running for the Shawsheen Tech School Committee.

Check back tomorrow and Thursday for the next two questions.

Question: Could you please describe what you believe the relationship should be between a Tewksbury representative on the Shawsheen Tech School Committee and Tewksbury officials, such as the Board of Selectmen and the Town Manager?

I- Peter Downing: The relationship between the Shawsheen Valley Technical School District and the Town Manager and Board of Selectmen has been thoroughly professional and productive. The Town Mansager has a very professional working relationship with the Superintendent-director and meets on a regular basis. For the past 28 years Shawsheen Tech's budget request has been agreed to by town management and recommended for positive action.  The relationship with the Board of Selectmen has been professional and courteous, including their support of our bond issue to maintain the school in splendid condition.

The Selectmen, in May of 2011 voted to support the Life Science Wing addition after receiving a detailed financial plan minimizing the impact on Tewksbury taxpayers.

Michael Kelley: I think it is imperative that we find ways to increase direct communication and collaboration, especially in the present fiscal climate. This goal is easily achieved through the implementation of scheduled quarterly meetings with the Board of Selectmen to talk about the budget outlook, proposed capital improvements and any other areas of concern.

I also feel strongly that our Shawsheen Tech School Committee members should work with the Board of Selectmen and Finance Committee to formally present their annual budget assessment, nearly $5.5 million, during a televised public hearing here in our community. This would also be a great opportunity for the committee members to publicly advocate for the school!

During budget season this would culminate in what should be full representation by all elected officials at each and every Tewksbury Annual Town Meeting to provide direct support for their budget. I think as an elected Shawsheen Tech School Committee member this in particular is critical to supporting the school district, but today it just isn't being done.
