Cooking Matters at the Store Event Day at Tewksbury Walmart June 4
Event teaches low-income families to shop for healthy food on a tight budget.

On Thursday, June 4 in Tewksbury, Cooking Matters Massachusetts will empower 100 low-income Massachusetts residents with the shopping skills needed to stretch their food dollar and serve healthy, affordable meals to their families. Local families will learn to compare unit prices, purchase fruits and vegetables on a budget, read food labels, and select whole grains on grocery store tours sponsored by Nestle. Nestle is also donating gift cards to each participant to use for the $10 Challenge at the end of each tour.
The event will take place on Thursday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Walmart Supercenter, 333 Main St. in Tewksbury. Cooking Matters Massachusetts staff and volunteers, elected officials, local families participating in event and Walmart staff will be at the event whose goal is to teach low-income families to shop for healthy food on a tight budget.
Organizers say a survey released by Share Our Strength found that 85 percent of low-income families want to make healthy meals, but only about half are able to do so on a regular basis. Families cited the cost of healthy groceries as their primary obstacle. Cooking Matters at the Store tours provide shoppers with a strategic plan that enables them to stretch their food dollar in a healthy way.
