A 21-year-old Lowell man sustained life-threatening injuries Tuesday night when the car he was driving on Andover Street left the road and slammed into a utility pole.

According to Tewksbury Police, dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting the accident at 9:17 p.m. at 1411 Andover St. near Sheridan Lane.

Rescue crews had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the man from his Black Toyota Camry. A MedFlight was immediately requested and arrived at a nearby landing zone at approximately 9:34 p.m.

According to Tewksbury Police, the victim was flown to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. His condition was not immediately available and police are not releasing his name.

According to Deputy Police Chief John Voto, a State Police accident reconstruction team was on scene and the cause of the accident remains under investigation. Voto said the driver was the only person in the Camry and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
