Monday was the culmination of the 2012 TMHS Golf Season with the MIAA Division II North Sectional Golf Tournament which was held at Far Corners Golf Course in Boxford, MA. Overall, it was a good performance for our team and players. The past three years we have qualified for this sectional tournament but we unfortunately have finished in last place each of those three years! Today was a different case for us. With five of the six participating players all being seniors, as well as returning state tournament participants from last year. With Junior Jeff Giasullo being our only new player to this format and tournament we went in with an increased level of expectation.
When all play was finished today our team had finished in fifth place, with a team total of 355, just three shots behind fourth place finisher Beverly High School.
Coach Drouin and I are excited for this seasons group of players, all thirteen players, not just the six that played in this tournament because without the other seven we wouldn't have been able to get to this tournament in the first place! At the tournament there are six players and you take the top four scores to count towards your team score. Today's four scores that were counted were those of Tyler Slavin (84), Ryan Muise (85), Jeff Giasullo (92) and Pat Doherty (94). Fellow seniors Derek Petti and Mike Casey also played for the Redmen today but their scores were not used in the top four scores.
"It really has been a great season for all of us involved in this program. It really has been a pleasure watching this group of seniors play three and four years in the program and to see them mature as both golfers and people has been an absolute pleasure!" We are extremely excited that they were able to finish in second place in the league with a league record of 9-3-1 and have an overall record of 12-5-1." According to longtime coach Larry Basteri, that has been the most wins accumulated by the golf team in some 20 years, dating back to the Gary Walsh led teams of the early 1990's. It's a tough conference as it is in all sports, but we had some fantastic wins against perennial powers such as Andover (MVC Division I Co-Champion), Chelmsford, Lowell and eventual MVC Division II Champion North Andover (win and a tie). It will be difficult to replace this group of players and individuals but they really had led by the example they set and have shown the younger guys what it takes to have as successful a season as we had this year!
As a result of our outstanding team season we were also able to have three players receive some individual awards as well. Senior three year player Tyler Slavin was selected to the Merrimack Valley Conference All Conference team and Senior three year player Pat Doherty and junior three year player Jeff Giasullo were selected to the Merrimack Valley All Star Team as well. Again, without the rest of the players on our team none of these accomplishments would have occurred. The seniors on this years squad were; Tyler Slavin, Pat Doherty, Derek Petti, Mike Casey, Ryan Muise, Eric Hunter, Sean Thomann and Chris Paquette. The junors were Jeff Giasullo, Zach Strahan, Brandon Evangelista, and Jack Cash while the lone sophomore was Ryan Meade. We look forward to these underclassmen continuing the tradition that has been rekindled by tho group of seniors.
We would also be remiss if we didn't give a huge thank you and show our appreciation to both the Trull and Ginsburg families for their continued support of our golf program by allowing us to practice and play our matches each year. Without them our golf program would not be able to have the success that it has throughout the years and we are so grateful for them and their support of the TMHS student athletes.
