Redmen Roundup: Lirakis, Conway Lead Girls Hockey, Boys Track Wins Tough

Girls Hockey

Tewksbury/Methuen 4, Weston/Wayland 3

The formula to winning in high school hockey isn't especially complicated.

If you have an outstanding goalie and a couple of skilled snipers on your first line and you're likely going to win more than you lose.

The Tewksbury/Methuen girls have both and, as a result, they are 2-0-0 to start their first-ever season.

On Wednesday night, the Red Rangers built up a 4-1 lead over Wayland/Weston after two periods and held on for a 4-3 win. Wayland/Weston carried the play much of the game, peppering T-M goalie Taylor Lirakis with more than 40 shots. But Lirakis was up to the task, keeping the visitors at bay with save after save.

The offense was taken care of by Amanda Conway, who notched her second straight hat trick, giving her six goals on the season. Kathleen LeFebre scored her first goal of the year for the Red Rangers. Kelly Golini and Niame Cote each contributed an assist.

Boys Indoor Track

Tewksbury 45, Billerica 41

The Redmen dug deep and pulled out a gritty, 43-41 win over the Indians.

"I Have been around hundreds of sporting events and this meet was one of the most impressive displays of toughness and competitiveness i have every seen, from top to bottom it was really outstanding," said Coach Bill Meuse. "The times do not really indicate much but its about out performing the kid in the other uniform and that is what our kids did today."

Redmen strength event athletes don't often get a lot of publicity but on this day, the star of the meet was shot putter John Fiorelli, whose career best throw of 51-0 feet was enough to win the event. Teammate Steve DeFrancesco was 2nd with a throw of 43'9.75".

"He knew going in, he had to throw his best and more to win and he did," said Meuse. "The kid has worked so hard to get to this point and I'm so glad everything clicked for him today."

Tewksbury (2-0) grabbed an early lead in the meet with a sweep of the 55m hurdles. Eddie Matovu (8.2) was followed by Dom Rosado (8.6) and Andrew Nguyen (9.3).

Wrestling

North Andover 53, Tewksbury 27

The Redmen ran into a buzz-saw against state power North Andover, the newest member of the MVC.

But there were some highlights for the Redmen. Tim Martel picked up a pinfall win at 182, Broc Dokos won by pinfall at 170 and Nick Jansen won by pinfall at 285. Joe Berger won by pinfall at 145 and Troy Carey won by decision at 132.

Girls Indoor Track

Billerica 53, Tewksbury 33

The Redmen took it on the chin against a strong Billerica team.

One highlight for Tewksbury (1-1) was the sweep of the 50m dash by Sedgwick (7.9), Winn and Bradley. Jess Amadee placed third in the 50 hurdles and second in the high jump. Rebecca Davies scored a victory in the 1000 in 3:22.0. Paolella won the shot put with a throw of 27-7.5.
