Following the Tribute, on Thursday, Oct. 22 there will be a special dedication. Friends of the Mahoney’s have created something beautiful, memorable and lasting to honor Hugh, Ruth and John.
On New Year’s Eve 1975, Dr. Hugh Mahoney, his wife Ruth, and their 15-year-old son John were murdered in their Tewksbury home during a robbery attempt. Over his career as an obstetrician in Middlesex County, Dr. Mahoney delivered hundreds of babies, Ruth was a nurse at St. John’s Hospital, and John was a freshman at Austin Prep. Family and friends found themselves helpless, disempowered, and bewildered. In many ways, this tragic event changed our community.

Tim Sheehan and his crew at Ryan’s Iron Works hand made an iron bench; truly a work of art and a labor of love. The bench has a permanent home at the Place of Peace, a name given to the parcel of land from the stone that sits there with the inscription, “This Place of Peace and Natural Beauty is dedicated to Dr. Hugh, Ruth & John Mahoney.”
The community is invited to the dedication on Thursday, Oct. 22 from 5-6 p.m., Place of Peace Long Pond, Whipple Road, across from the intersection at Pleasant Street.
