Tewksbury Cracks Down On Crosswalk Violations With New Campaign

Police will be out in force to enforce laws that protect pedestrians in crosswalks.

TEWKSBURY, MA — The police department will be conducting an enforcement campaign to ensure drivers comply with laws on crosswalk safety and pedestrian right of way.

The Tewksbury Police Department posted the following on social media:

Throughout April and May, our Traffic Unit will be conducting targeted enforcement in various locations around town, focusing on crosswalk safety and pedestrian right-of-way laws.

As a reminder, Massachusetts General Law Chapter 89, Section 11 requires that:

- Vehicles must stop for pedestrians in a marked crosswalk when they are on the same side or within 10 feet of it.

- Drivers must not pass any vehicle stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross.

- Violators can face fines up to $200.
