Calling all knitters, crocheters, needle workers, beaders, and colorists! Bring your own craft project to the Library and work on it while enjoying conversation with other crafters. (Please, no crafts involving glue or paint.) Take advantage of the many books available at the library to get ideas for your next project or to explore a new craft.

Join genealogist Linda MacIver as she takes you through the path of research in the U.S. that prepares you to “hop the pond” to find civil registration and census records in England from 1837 to 1939. Linda is an educator, lecturer, librarian and genealogy researcher. She is retired from a 27-year career at the Boston Public Library where she inaugurated the BPL patron genealogy classes. Linda is the past Secretary and Civil Records Director for Federal Records for the Massachusetts Genealogical Council (MGC), a member of the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists (MSOG) and the Essex (MA) Society of Genealogists (ESOG). She also serves as the New England Representative for the Essex (England!) Record Office.

Travel with Jack Holmes, the Traveling Photographer, in the Province of Quebec, along the St Lawrence River, and a little of New Brunswick, Canada. On the north bank of the St Lawrence River there are many historic scenic cities and locations. The historic Old Towns of Montreal and Quebec City have an old-world look, yet a definite North American vibe. Tadoussac is one of North America’s oldest whaling sites and a modern whale watching venue. Gaspe has both scenic coastal and wild mountain regions. Holmes is the owner of "Images From Near and Far" at Western Avenue Studios in Lowell. A retired high school teacher, he previously served as President of the Greater Lynn Photographic Association and Gallery Manager of the Loading Dock Gallery in Lowell.

Why did it take so long to incorporate women and minorities into the Astronaut Corps? Join NASA Solar System Ambassador David S. Ball as he discusses the tension between science and flight test, political considerations, and the luck of the draw that determines who gets to fly. Ball served 26 years in the US Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, and is a now a volunteer educator with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Join us for a brand new, teen-run club - Speedcubing Club! Beginners will learn the skills needed to work towards solving their first cube. All experience levels are welcome. Join us for stories, songs, movement, instruments, dancing and more. Get your early literacy skills on! All of our story times are interactive for children and their caregivers. Please be ready to participate and play. Don't worry, we will have a printout with all of the songs and rhymes we are using so you can follow along! Story Times run in sessions. You can drop in one week, every week or however works best for your schedule. No registration is required. Toddler Story Time will run every Monday from September 8 - December 15 (excluding closings and other exceptions).
IN PERSON: Playful Engineers: Artful Mechanisms (*RR)

Join Playful Engineers for a hands-on make-and-take STEAM program, for making kinetic art from popsicle sticks, brads, cardboard, paperclips, wood, wire, and other common materials - from crank or cam-driven toys and linkage mechanisms to flexible geometric figurines. Kids explore as they build, discovering stories, characters, or scenes in each mechanism’s movement. You will start by exploring the materials, then receive a quick demonstration, then return to building your fabulous projects! This event is open to children in grades K-5.
IN PERSON: Baby Lapsit Story Time

A gentle, interactive story time designed especially for our youngest patrons! Babies and their caregivers will enjoy simple stories, rhymes, songs, and bounces that support early language development and bonding. This program is perfect for infants who sit in a caregiver’s lap and are just beginning to explore the world through sound and movement. Join us for sweet moments, early literacy fun, and lots of snuggles. Baby Lapsit is designed for young children ages 0 to 2 years old and their caregivers. All of our story times are interactive for children and their caregivers. Please be ready to participate and play. Don't worry, we will have a printout with all of the songs and rhymes we are using so you can follow along! Story Times run in sessions. The Family Resource Network is funded by the Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Grant (CFCE) from the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care.

Channel your inner artist and make a masterpiece out of tiny dots (a painting technique known as Pointillism). Experiment with bright colors, playful patterns, and unique tools like cotton swabs, daubers, and paint markers. We can't wait to see what you create! This event is open to children in grades 4-5.
