Major Kane Slayton received her direct commission as a Second Lieutenant from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 1992. After receiving her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1996, she did her residency training at the National Capital Consortium Pediatric Residency, located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. From there she was stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas from 1999-2006 in which she held several physician and professional positions such as:

August 1999 - February 2005, February 2006 - May 2006
Officer in Charge; Primary Care Clinic 3, IACH, Fort Riley, KS
August 2004 - December 2004
Chief of Pediatrics, IACH, Fort Riley, KS
May 2003 – February 2005
Medical Provider, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, 125th Forward Support Battalion, Camp Taji, Iraq
February 2005 – January 2006
While stationed at Fort Riley, she met her husband, Dr. Eric Slayton, MD who also served in the United States Army and is an Iraq Veteran. They now live in Maine with their three children.
