William A. “Bill” Magro, 84

Retired Captain, Tewksbury Fire Department.

William A. “Bill” Magro, age 84, a WWII Veteran and retired firefighter, died Christmas morning, December 25, at the Tewksbury Hospital, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was the beloved husband of M. Theresa “Terri” (Adams) Magro, with whom he had celebrated a 64th wedding anniversary this past August 7th.

Bill was born in Cambridge, June 27, 1928, a son of the late Anthony and Helen (Blood) Magro, and was raised in Cambridge. During WWII he served in the 82nd Airborne division of the Army Air Corps. Bill and Terri moved to Tewksbury in 1954, and in their retirement, wintered in Ft. Pierce, FL.

He enjoyed travel and loved to golf.

Captain Magro began his firefighting career as a Call Firefighter in April 1957. He was appointed as a permanent Firefighter on November 21, 1960, and assigned Badge # 11, with Unit #2, South Station. He earned a promotion to Captain on November 26, 1973, and received an Associates in Science Degree in Fire Protection and Safety Technology in June 1979. He retired from the department honorably on February 24, 1986. He had also worked as an Assistant Electrician.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three children, William E. Magro and his wife Frances (Piazza) Magro of Methuen, Thomas A. Magro of Nashua, NH, and his fiancé Darlene Forsythe of Dracut, and Janet M. (Smith) Consoli and her husband Stephen of Hudson, NH; eight grandchildren, MaryBeth Belfatto of Redding, CT, Jaclyn Reda of Litchfield, NH, Thomas Magro of Dunstable, Rebecca Butterworth of Methuen, Ryan Magro of W. VA, Kristen Magro of Nashua, NH, William A. Magro of San Diego, CA, Jeffrey Magro of Dunstable; two great grandchildren, William and Christopher; a brother, Robert Magro, formerly of Wilmington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Shad Smith; and a brother, Richard Magro.

Relatives and friends will be received Sunday, Dec. 30, from 1:00 to 4:00 in the Tewksbury Funeral Home. His funeral will begin Monday, Dec. 31, at 8:45 from the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass Monday at 10:00 in St. Dorothy’s Church, Main St. (Rte 38) Wilmington. Burial with Army and Fire Department Honors will follow at Tewksbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the MSPCA, Nevin’s Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01854 will be appreciated.
