Billing Increases To Hit Wakefield Energy Customers
The Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light Department warned on Friday that spiking energy and fuel prices will result in higher bills.
WAKEFIELD, MA — Wakefield energy customers can expect to receive larger energy bills in the coming months as fuel and energy costs spike globally, the Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light Department said on Friday.
“Pervasive spikes” in fuel and energy prices are coupling with ongoing global supply issues, according to the department.
“We strive to ensure fair and competitive prices, however we are not immune to the widespread cost increases of purchasing energy,” the department said.

Officials said they do not have a “timeline or specifics” regarding the increases. They have directed consumers to available energy efficient programs to help limit energy usage, though. These include multiple rebate programs, among other things.

Wakefield is far from the only municipality facing these kinds of issues. On Wednesday, a new study from the Beacon Hill Institute noted that inflation had driven up prices in energy, gasoline and other sectors in Massachusetts at a higher rate than the national average.
Locally, in nearby Reading, the Reading Municipal Light Department warned earlier this month that “typical higher summer bills are upon us.”
The department, like Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light, cited heightened energy costs as a driver of these bill increases.
