Breakheart Reservation Fires: Reservation Closed Through Sunday

The fires have been burning since Tuesday, sending smoke over area communities while keeping firefighters busy.

SAUGUS, MA — Fires in the Breakheart Reservation continued to send smoke into the air around Saugus and Wakefield on Friday, prompting the closure of the reservation for a fourth straight day since fires first ignited on Tuesday.

The reservation will now remain closed through the end of the day on Sunday, according to the state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).

Viewed on Friday afternoon, multiple plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the Breakheart Reservation. Of those, one apparent fire was burning close to Main Street in Saugus and the Wakefield/Saugus town-line.

Firefighters from multiple agencies, including the Saugus Fire Department and the DCR were on scene running hoses into the woods as of 2:45 p.m.

Breakheart has kept local crews busy throughout this week. Though firefighters have not identified a formal cause of the fires, they were considering them “suspicious” as of Tuesday night, according to WCVB.

The fires had burned 25 acres of the Breakheart Reservation as of Thursday morning. New estimates were not available as of Friday afternoon.
