WAKEFIELD, MA — Wakefield residents will have a few extra days to get rid of their yard waste at the Nahant Street Yard Waste site in town this year, officials announced on Monday.

Originally scheduled to close for the season on Sunday, Dec. 4, the site, also known as “The Pit,” will now remain open through this coming weekend.

Upcoming hours are as follows:

Residents don’t need a permit, though, to use the site’s separate corrugated cardboard drop-off service.

The corrugated cardboard container is for corrugated cardboard only, officials noted on Monday. As such, individuals should avoid disposing of cereal boxes, shoeboxes, pizza boxes or other paper products in the container.

Any cardboard being disposed should be dry, flattened and free from Styrofoam, packing peanuts, plastic wrap, bubble wrap, oil or grease.

Unlike residential curbside recycling, the cardboard bin will not be taken to a sorting center. While tape and labels are OK, the town needs loads to be free from other contamination in order to sell the corrugated cardboard, which covers the cost of the service, officials said.

Corrugated cardboard disposal is available to residents during the Nahant Street Site’s open hours.
