The Department of Public Works annual rain barrel program is one of their most popular initiatives of the year. From now until May 1, residents can purchase a Great American Rain Barrel (GARB) for discounted price of $79. These barrels are produced in Massachusetts and are 100 percent repurposed. According to GARB, it takes less than 1/8 inch of rain to fill a well-situated 60-gallon barrel.

“We’ve had such positive feedback about this program and are pleased to see more and more residents learning how rain barrels can be used to water their gardens and lawns. We have many residents use several and create a linked watering system,” notes Public Works Business Manager Ann Waitt. “It’s a sustainable way to decrease water consumption and costs, improve stormwater management and runoff, and save energy at water-treatment plants. And these GARB barrels are not only very easy to set up and use, they also come in a variety of colors.”

Barrels can be ordered online and will be available for pick up on Thursday, May 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Wakefield Public Works Facility on North Avenue. Deadline for purchase is May 1, 2022, at midnight. Learn more and order now.
