"The resident said he heard the smoke detectors going off on the first floor and found smoke coming from the basement area," Morrice said in an email Monday morning. All residents exited the building prior to firefighters arrival on scene, and no injuries were reported.

The firefighters had to lay hundreds of feet of water supply hose line to the nearest available hydrant, Morrice said. The extreme heat of the closed basement area made an intitial attack difficult but crew members were still able to get the fire knocked down quickly. The scene was being cleaned up by 7:09 a.m.
