Walpole Girls’ Lax Edges Hingham to Advance in MIAA State Tourney

The Rebels will travel to top seeded Westwood in the MIAA D1 South Sectional quarterfinal round Friday at a time to be announced.

The Walpole High School girls’ lacrosse team withstood a furious rally by visiting Hingham Wednesday to beat the Harborwomen, 16-15 in the first round of the MIAA Division 1 South Sectional State Tournament.

The win puts No. 8 Walpole (14-6) in Friday's quarterfinal round against top seeded – and unbeaten – Westwood (20-0). The time of the quarterfinal match-up was not announced as of Thursday morning.

Walpole got off to a strong start, establishing leads of 5-1 and 10-5 before Hingham stormed back to tie the game at 11 with 22:30 remaining in the second half.

From there, it was a back-and-forth match that saw ties at 14 and 15 apiece before WHS senior captain Michaela Tosone netted the eventual game-winner with 4:16 left in the second half.

Tosone ended the game with five goals. Fellow senior captain Erin Richardson led the Rebels with six goals and senior Seana Cofsky added three.

Hingham, the tournament’s No. 9 seed, ends its season at 12-7-2.
