How Waltham Voted In Trump, Biden, Stanley Race

WALTHAM, MA — As the dust settled from the 2020 general election, unofficial results from the Nov. 3 election in Waltham show city voters overwhelmingly siding with Democratic candidates in races ranging from president to senator to representative in general court.

Waltham City Clerk Bob Waddick described Tuesday as "A trouble free day."

Turnout hit 78 percent in Waltham, slightly higher than the nearly 77 percent who turned out in the 2016 presidential election. Of the 36,348 registered voters in Waltham, 28,307 voted in this election, which was only 1,561 more than voted in the 2016 general election.

Waltham voted in favor of the right to repair ballot question, following much of the state. Question number 2 on the ballot, regarding ranked choice ballots won in Waltham, but not so in the rest of the state where 54 percent of voters voted against the move and only 43 percent voted in favor.

Apart from the presidential race, Waltham voters were choosing sides in a U.S. House race, two statewide ballot questions, a U.S. Senate race and Representative in General Court for the 9th Middlesex District race between Democrat incumbent Tom Stanley and independent Waltham City Councilor George Darcy.

If it were up to Waltham voters, they would put Vice President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the White House come Jan. 1. The rest of Massachusetts voters appear to be less enthusiastic of that outcome, though still in favor of a Biden presidency over a Trump. With 87 percent of districts tallied, the state tally puts 66 percent in favor of a Biden, Harris ticket versus 33 percent for a Trump, Pence ticket Wednesday.

Councilor for 3rd District Marilyn Petitto Devaney; Senator in General Court for 3rd Middlesex District, Michael Barrett; Representative in general court for the 10th Middlesex district, John Lawn; and Register of Probate for Middlesex County, Tara DeCristofaro all ran unopposed and therefore won.

Tuesday's results are considered preliminary and include all ballots counted through the day.

The city is waiting for mail-in ballots postmarked by Nov. 3 and arriving at the City Clerk's Office by Friday, Nov. 6. Those will be hand counted on Monday, Nov. 9 and added to the unofficial total that night. Overseas ballots can arrive within 10 days of the election, so those will be hand-counted until Friday, Nov. 13 when those, too, will be added to the unofficial total that night by 5 p.m.
