WALTHAM, MA — A month ago, Waltham police Officer Charlie Gryska went to the hospital because he had a headache and blurry vision. A day later, his world was upended. The doctors told him he had an aggressive brain tumor and set him on a vigorous radiation and medication treatment schedule. Now, neighbors and strangers alike across the city are rallying to support Gryska and his family.

The 33-year-old father of three young children and husband to his college sweetheart Jackie has been out of work since the diagnosis. He's been through two surgeries and he's still fighting. Just three weeks after a friend reached out to the community to pull together a GoFundMe campaign for the family, more than 1,600 people raised $193,519. Now the city and a local business is hosting another fundraiser for the family this weekend.

The fundraiser will be held at Pizzi Farm on Lincoln Street Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Former New England Patriots star Joe Andruzzi, Waltham first responders, Mayor Jeannette McCarthy, City Council President Paul Brasco, and fashion designer David Josef will be there to support the initiative by scooping ice cream. Proceeds and tips will benefit the Gryska Family. (Click the link for the fundraiser invite.)

"Anyone close to this couple, knows that either of them would be the first to offer help to family, friends, or colleagues," wrote Kate Moriarty on the GoFundMe fundraising page. "It is our hope to provide this family with some financial piece of mind so that they can put ALL of their strength and energy into Charlie’s treatment and recovery."

She added, "For anyone who is fortunate enough to have Charlie in their life, they know that he isn’t a 'good guy…' He’s a GREAT GUY! In all aspects of his life, Charlie brings laughter, loyalty, love, and strength to those around him."
