📰 News we're reading

1. District court case dismissed for Waltham man held in ICE custody in Louisiana (walthamtimes.org) — Several Waltham criminal cases saw major developments this week, including dismissal of four charges against a Waltham man now held in ICE custody in Louisiana. Other Waltham residents face pending child pornography, drug, and weapons charges, with new court dates and warrants issued through Waltham District Court and Middlesex Superior Court.

2. Sprinkler Leak Shuts Down Market Basket Store (thelegaladvocate.com) — A sprinkler malfunction temporarily shut down the Market Basket at 110 Market Place Drive in Waltham on Friday morning, though no one was hurt and the issue was quickly contained. Fire crews shut off the leaking system around 9:46 a.m. to prevent water damage, and there was no active fire response. Shoppers may have experienced brief disruption while the store addressed the problem.

3. Two Ten Footwear Foundation Names New Board Chair and Vice Chair (fdra.org) — A Waltham-based nonprofit serving footwear workers nationwide has named Jonathan Frankel as its new board chair and Ed Rosenfeld as vice chair, signaling a fresh chapter of leadership. The Two Ten Footwear Foundation, headquartered here, plans to expand its relief, scholarship, and professional development support for people working across the footwear industry.

4. Fair Use Is A Right. Ignoring It Has Consequences. (techdirt.com) — A legal fight over YouTube takedowns is pitting Waltham’s public access station, WCAC, against volunteer outlet Channel 781, which posts clips of city council meetings to inform local voters. Digital rights group EFF argues WCAC misused copyright claims under the DMCA and failed to respect fair use, after Channel 781’s channel was deactivated just days before a key municipal election. The case could shape how Waltham residents access and share local government coverage online.
