WALTHAM, MA — If you're running out of ideas on what to do around town, one more option is about to open up: PUTT at Prospect Hill will be opening Thursday, July 9, the city announced Monday.

The free family recreation facility will be open Thursdays and Fridays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Weekends noon to 6 p.m. at 314 Totten Pond Rd. All of the holes are themed from Prospect Hill. The facility, which has several amusement rides in addition to the putt putt, usually opens each spring, but this year had a delay because of the pandemic. While amusement rides aren't yet open, officials are hopeful those, too, will follow.

The usual face coverings, physical distancing, sanitization and hygiene measures will be in place there, as with elsewhere.

Prospect Hill Park is situated on Waltham's west side, near Route 128 and has 252 acres of wooded parkland with protected vernal pools and two summits maintained by the city's park department complete with hiking and walking trails. Big Summit is the second highest point in Greater Boston at 485 feet.

The city acquired approximately 75 acres for the park from private landowners in 1893 and then purchased the rest over several decades. The park reached 219 acres in 1927, according to research by Elizabeth M. Lowe. And fun fact; land was eventually added for ski slopes, which were open and used from 1949 to 1987.
