WALTHAM, MA — Somerville resident Paul Delmonico recently opened a wholesale coffee roasting business in Waltham, known as “Del’s Coffee Roasters.”

Delmonico’s business started in 2020 during the pandemic, when he began roasting at home to provide quality coffee to his friends. A year later, he had roasted and hand delivered more than 500 pounds of coffee.

Now another year later, Delmonico is roasting coffee full time in his new 1,100-square-foot facility at 100 Felton Street, where he roasts specialty green coffee beans from all over the world in light, medium, and dark varieties. The facility has a “home retro vibe,” featuring lumber from an old barn in Delmonico’s native town of Stow, a turntable and record collection, and an espresso machine.

“I’ve always had a passion for coffee,” Delmonico said. “One of my bigger goals is to supply the restaurants and cafés in Waltham with freshly roasted coffee to serve their customers.”

Delmonico learned about coffee roasting at the School of Coffee in Vermont, where he went for an entire week and roasted for four hours every day using various machines. He now chooses his coffee beans by prioritizing quality over quantity and making decisions based on the altitude and climate the product is grown in.

Once the green coffee chosen, Delmonico sample roasts to find a roast level that best suits the bean and brings out its natural flavors.

"You can tell the difference between a good cup of coffee and a bad cup of coffee,” Delmonico said. “I think people should know what they’re drinking for coffee and learn to understand its natural flavors.”

Starting Tuesday, May 17 at 10 a.m., Delmonico will host a weekly coffee tasting at his facility. Each Tuesday, participants will be given a chance to sample unique coffees, explore various brewing styles, and try different coffee recipes. To reserve tickets, click here

Del’s Coffee Roasters also has a new Porchfest blend that will be sold online starting Monday, May 16 and will be available at locations throughout the city at Somerville’s 2022 “PorchFest” on Saturday, May 14. All sales will benefit the Somerville Homeless Coalition.
