Waltham Residents Rally To Support Post Office

Waltham residents joined thousands of others across the commonwealth to show their support for the U.S. postal service Saturday.

WALTHAM, MA — Waltham residents joined thousands of others across the commonwealth to show their support for the U.S. postal service Saturday, by gathering on the Waltham common with signs.

Massachusetts's attorney general has said she is filing a lawsuit to stop what critics have called the Trump administration's attempted teardown of the U.S. Postal Service ahead of mail-in voting for the presidential election. Several politicians have accused the postmaster general, a Trump appointee, of helping the president with efforts to stall mail-in voting, and Trump has said he opposes funding that would allow for more ballots to be cast by mail.

The agency itself has said it won't be able to guarantee ballots will arrive in time to be counted for the November election.

"The USPS is at risk of being de-funded and sabotaged by President Trump with the clear goal of stopping mail-in voting," read the invitation to the Waltham rally. "This is not a joke. The sitting US President is making a full-fledged effort to hurt our democracy, during a global pandemic. People have the right to vote and have the right to do it safely."

The Waltham rally, was one of hundreds across the country as part of MoveOn.org "Save the Post Office Saturday" day of action. Many rally-goers were calling for Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to resign.
