Alternative Endings: Home Funerals & Green Burials

Just a few generations ago, all funerals occurred in the home parlor and burials were “green,” part of the natural cycle of death feeding new life. Home funerals and green burial are both legal in Massachusetts, but few cemeteries in the state allow the latter. Does Wayland? Kaat Vander Straeten is a certified permaculture designer in MetroWest Boston, where she founded several organizations for local resilience. Candace Currie is the former director of planning and cemetery development at Mount Auburn Cemetery. Join them in a conversation about these new old practices on Tuesday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Author Talk

Faced with feeding her busy family every night, local chef and food writer Leigh Belanger turned to her kitchen chalkboard. She quickly discovered that modern menu planning saves time and money, produces better dishes, cuts down on waste, and returns creativity to the kitchen. She’ll discuss her new cookbook and menu planning guide, My Kitchen Chalkboard, on Thursday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Craft a Book Turkey

Make a fun, decorative paper turkey out of an old book (which we’ll provide). We'll be using Exacto knives and hot glue, so this activity on Friday, November 2 at 1:30 p.m. is recommended for ages 12 and up.

The Great Presenters: On Gossamer Wings

Model airplanes can range from packaged toys to giant, radio-controlled scale models that a child could sit in. And then there are the ones that weigh less than one of the bills in your wallet. Enthusiast Ray Harlan explains the attractions and challenges of these delicate, rubber-powered wonders on Tuesday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Evening Book Group

Inclusive Playgroup: Stories, Songs, and Sign

This interactive, inclusive music and literacy group is for young children at all levels of communication and ability. Facilitated by Beverly Mobilia of Wayland Community Partnerships for Children and Families. For ages newborn to 3 years. Wednesdays, Oct. 24, Nov. 14 and 28, at 11:15-12:00 p.m.

Zumba

Rhythm and dance program led by Hayley Chizinsky of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio. For ages 2.5 to 4 years. Tuesday, October 30, 10:30 a.m.

Storytime with Corbyn the Dog

Children will listen to dog stories and have a chance to visit with Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed.

Corbyn (with her owner Helen) has been certified as a therapy dog by Pets and People Foundation. For ages 3 and up. Thursday, November 8, 10:30 a.m.

WCPA Pajama Storytime and Color a Smile

WCPA will be holding this event to support two amazing non profits: Color a Smile and Pajama Program. Your little ones can come in their PJ’s for a pajama story time (led by Youth Services librarian Pam McCuen) and color a cheerful drawing that WCPA will package for distribution to senior citizens, our troops overseas and anyone in need of a smile. Please also bring a new pair of PJ’s (for kids newborn through age 18). Saturday, November 10, 10-11:30 a.m.

Halloween Party

Drop in for a haunting afternoon of spooky crafts, magical treats, and monstrously fun activities. Costumes welcome but not required! For ages 5 and up. Wednesday, October 24, 3:00-4:30 p.m.

Parent/Child Book Group

This book discussion group is for 4th and 5th graders with a parent. October’s book is Framed! a T.O.A.S.T. Mystery by James Ponti. We will also choose the book for next month. For 4th and 5th graders, with a parent. Wednesday, October 24, 7:00-8:00 p.m.

Let’s Build: Slowest Falling Ghost

Let’s Build is a hands-on building workshop for kids in grades 3-5. Each month will feature a different building challenge. This month’s Let’s Build Challenge is to build the slowest falling ghost. Let’s Build workshops are run by Wayland High School Seniors Eileen Chau and Julia Treese. Wednesday, October 31, 3:00-4:30 p.m.

Lego Club

Children will make fabulous creations out of Legos. This month’s theme is Flying Machines! For ages 5 and up. Wednesday, November 7, 3:00-4:00p.m.

FOR TEENS

Franken-Toys

Teens! Unleash your creativity by taking apart old toys and putting them back together in weird combinations. There will be prizes for strangest, silliest, and more! Supplies provided but toy donations welcome. For teens in grades 6 to 12. Monday, November 5, 2:45-4:15 p.m.
