ADULT SERVICES
The Hidden History of Black Boston
Commemorate Juneteenth by delving into the rich narratives of Black Boston neighborhoods and pivotal sites, events, and figures. Award-winning educator Joel Mackall leads a conversation that will roam from the eras of Faneuil Hall and Long Wharf to the vibrant communities that flourished in Beacon Hill in the early republic, and the South End and Roxbury in the early 20th century. Evening Book Group
Foster by Claire Keegan. A child is taken by her feckless father to live with relatives on a farm, not knowing when or if she will be brought home again. She finds an affection and warmth she has not known and begins to blossom. But there is something unspoken in this new, well-tended household, and summer must come to an end. In person and online. Great Presenters: John Barrett
The President of the Vokes Theatre offers history and tales from Wayland’s own 120-year-old jewel box of a playhouse. John Barrett has been at Curry College since 1997 where he is a Chair and Senior Lecturer in Communication. In addition to teaching courses in the Theatre concentration, he also serves as the Technical Director for all Curry Theatre productions and occasionally directs. In person and online. Register. Finishing Touches: Demystifying Hospice
What exactly is hospice, and what is it not? In the final program of a three-part series, a panel of hospice social workers, nursing aids and volunteers will address the concerns of patients, caregivers, friends, and loved ones about what can be a difficult, scary topic. Researching the History of Your Home
Whether your house is 20 years old or 150 years old, genealogy professional Marian Pierre-Louis will teach you how to find deeds, chain a deed, and locate other sources of information, such as U.S. Federal Census records. Learn some tricks to get the most out of your house history research. This talk is appropriate for both beginners and those who have some research experience. Music Exchange Listening Room
If it’s the second Tuesday of the month, it must be Open Mic Night at the Library! Settle into a
seat in our beautiful Round Room and enjoy the lightly amplified efforts of whichever brave

Biodiversity and Evolution
Elizabeth Sherman, Professor Emerita at Bennington College, discusses the explanation for the diversity of life on earth: evolution, the most important unifying concept in all of biology. Evolution enables us to understand the history of our planet and the history of us. And it helps us predict the consequences of ongoing environmental degradation. Register. Virtual Author Talk: Frieda McFadden and The Housemaid is Watching
The latest installment of the Housemaid series finds Millie Calloway finally free of caring for other people’s homes and with a home of her own. The neighborhood seems perfect for raising her kids. So why is she being warned, “Be careful of the neighbors”? Physician and best-selling author McFradden talks about this newest book and others. Register. Thursday, June 13 at 8 p.m.

SUMMER READING
Our 2024 Summer Reading Program Read, Renew, Repeat kicks off on June 18 with a magic show by Scott Martell. Other programming highlights include Andrew Silver’s one-man circus, live animals with Joy from Joys of Nature, a performance of Peter and the Wolf, a family concert with Rolie Polie Guacamole, as well as many fun craft and STEM challenges. Starting on June 10, kids can track their reading online or on paper logs to earn tickets for prizes. Teen program highlights include a Henna workshop, DIY pride buttons, yarn bombing, and Mexican metal tooling. Teens can also track their reading to earn tickets for prizes.

Movement with Little Beats

Storywalk Kickoff at Hannah Williams Playground
Join Ms. Pam and Ms. Jodi (from Family ACCESS Community Connections) at the Hannah Williams Playground to celebrate the opening of the Story Walk of Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! by Bob Barner. Art Club for Kids
Art Club is for kids in Grades 2-5 who love to draw and paint! This club, led by Wayland parent Emily Kristofek, will meet the first Monday of each month. In this session, we will paint great waves! Using markers and paint pens we’ll layer aquatic hues over each other to make a realistic and splashy piece to take home. For kids in grades 2 to 5. Registration required. Please register HERE. Lego Club

Henna Workshop for Teens
This workshop will take an unconventional approach to the ancient art form. Teens will begin by getting familiar with the henna cone, and then draw patterns, such as flowers, leaves, and vines, on a canvas. Teens are also welcome to draw on their own hands. All materials will be provided. Local teen Niyathi Srinivasan from Henna for Humanity will led this workshop. For teens in grades 6 and up. Please register HERE. Thursday, June 10 at 4:00 p.m.
Pizza Study Night for Teens During Exam Week
Wayland High School Students! Feed your brain while studying with your friends at the library! Pizza will be served at 5:30 p.m. Snacks will be served throughout the evening. Conversation with Kids Comic Advocate Carol Tilley and Comics Creator Jonathan Todd
Comics scholar Carol Tilley and comics creator Jonathan Todd will talk about the intersection of kids comics, libraries and education.
This program is for teachers, librarians, and parents who want to do more to integrate comics and graphic novels into the school curriculum. This program is also for anyone who loves graphic novels! There will be refreshments and books for sale in the Round Room after the event.
Carol Tilley is an Associate Professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois. A former high school librarian, Carol teaches classes primarily for people planning on working as youth services librarians. Carol is also a comics scholar, studying the intersection of comics, librarians, and kids, especially during the mid-20th century. She has served as a juror for three major comics awards (the Eisners, the Ringos, and the Lynd Ward Prize) and is a past-president of the Comics Studies Society, an international scholarly organization. Besides teaching about comics and researching comics history, Carol also speaks to librarians, scholars, and others about the value of comics and their power to transform young readers' lives.
Jonathan Todd, co-founder of the Boston Kids' Comics Fest, is a local artist, writer, and educator whose most recent graphic novel Timid was published this spring by Scholastic.
